1897, Irish srath + Coe (modern strath), a variant of Glencoe, invented in Canada to avoid the negative associations with the Massacre of Glencoe (1692), created as an aristocratic title for Donald Smith, 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal. Other uses derive from places named after Smith.
